In a sickening and heartless act, Jalan Rodger James, 39, has been arrested in connection with an unprovoked assault on an elderly woman in Santa Monica.

The victim, identified only as a 73-year-old woman, was taking a peaceful morning walk near 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk when James approached her. Unhinged and muttering incoherently, he ignored her attempts to evade him and ruthlessly shoved her to the ground. The impact left her with painful abrasions and a back injury.

Suspect’s Appalling Behavior Doesn’t End There

Witnesses reported that James continued his reign of terror by attempting to strike bystanders in the vicinity. This brazen display of violence alarmed both the community and law enforcement.

Officers and a police drone unit quickly converged on the scene, where they spotted James near 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue. He was promptly arrested and charged with an array of offenses, including felony counts of:

  1. Battery with Serious Bodily Injury
  2. Elder/Adult Abuse
  3. Resisting an Executive Officer (two counts)

James’s alleged homelessness does not excuse his heinous actions. In fact, LA News Center has learned that he faces additional assault charges stemming from a separate case that is currently under review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Community Outraged; Police Declare Zero Tolerance

Santa Monica police chief Ramon Batista has made it crystal clear that the safety of the elderly is non-negotiable. “Assaults on vulnerable individuals will not be tolerated, and we will relentlessly pursue felony charges in such cases,” he said.
