Stetson Bennett’s Triumphant Return to the Rams After Battling Mental Health

Former Georgia star quarterback Stetson Bennett, a two-time national champion with the Bulldogs, has made a triumphant return to the Los Angeles Rams after taking a courageous break from the sport to address his mental health.

A Season Interrupted

After a promising start to his rookie season with the Rams in 2023, Bennett was unexpectedly placed on the reserve/non-football illness list just days before the regular season kicked off. The news left many speculating about the nature of his absence.

Breaking the Silence

During a recent interview, Bennett candidly acknowledged that his decision to step away was directly related to his mental health. “Yeah, I would say that,” he confirmed when asked if his absence fell into that realm.

Bennett, now 26, explained that he had made the difficult decision with the support of Rams brass after several thoughtful discussions. “It was one we thought necessary at the time,” he said.

A Journey of Recovery

Bennett spent his time away from football reflecting and working on his well-being. He expressed gratitude to the Rams organization for allowing him space and privacy during that challenging period.

“I went back home, and thank goodness that Les [Snead] and coach [Sean] McVay and everybody involved allowed me to do that,” he said.

Back with a Renewed Perspective

Bennett is now back on the practice field, competing for the Rams’ backup quarterback role alongside veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. His coaches and teammates have praised his focus and determination since his return.

“It’s been a pleasure working with him,” said offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. “He’s come to work every single day focused with the intent of getting better.” He added, “If their intent is right, which Stetson’s is right now, that’s all you can ask.”

Bennett stressed his excitement to be back doing something he loves. “It’s great to get back to football. It’s what I love,” he said.

A Poignant Message of Hope

Bennett’s journey serves as an important reminder of the complex challenges that professional athletes can face, even those who appear to have it all. His decision to prioritize his mental health is a testament to the need for greater awareness and support for mental well-being in all walks of life.

As the Rams eye another playoff run in 2024, Bennett’s return brings both depth to the quarterback position and an inspiring story of resilience in the face of adversity.
