Santa Clara Broncos Player Ejected for Punching Opponent

The Santa Clara Broncos men’s basketball team faced a setback during their game against the Saint Mary’s Gaels when guard Jalen Benjamin was ejected from the game for delivering a punch to the stomach of center Mitchell Saxen. The incident occurred with 5:18 remaining in the first half, and Benjamin was immediately removed from the game.

Despite Benjamin’s ejection, the Saint Mary’s Gaels held on to win the game with a score of 82-77. Benjamin, who had only been in the game for four minutes, transferred to Santa Clara before the start of the 2023-24 season from Mount St. Mary’s. Throughout this season, he has been averaging 4.5 points, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 rebounds.

On the other hand, Saxen, the player who received the punch, finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, and two assists. The Gaels’ guard Augustus Marciulionis led the team with an impressive performance, scoring 20 points, providing six assists, and making three steals. He played a crucial role in starting a 16-0 run for the Gaels.

Despite Benjamin’s ejection, the Santa Clara Broncos had strong performances from guard Carlos Marshall Jr., who led the team with 23 points, Adama Bal with 18 points, and Johnny O’Neil with 15 points. However, they were the only players from Santa Clara to reach double figures in scoring.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels continue to dominate in the West Coast Conference, improving their record to 17-6 overall and maintaining a perfect 8-0 conference record. On the other hand, the Broncos’ loss dropped their overall record to 15-8, with a conference record of 6-2.
