Convicted Pelosi Attacker Breaks Down Remorsefully, Receiving 30-Year Sentence

Resentencing in Paul Pelosi Hammer Attack Case

In a turn of events, David DePape, the man convicted of attacking Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been resentenced to 30 years in prison.

A Judge’s Regret

District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley initially sentenced DePape to 30 years in prison in May 2023. However, she later realized she had made a mistake by not providing DePape with a chance to speak before delivering the sentence.

“I’m genuinely sorry for my mistake,” Corley told DePape and his attorneys at the recent resentencing hearing.

DePape’s Apology

With a prepared statement in hand, DePape expressed remorse for his actions on October 28, 2022, when he broke into the Pelosi’s San Francisco home and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

“I feel terribly for hurting Mr. Pelosi. I should have gone home when I found out Nancy Pelosi wasn’t there,” DePape stated.

He went on to say, “Looking back, I can see I was not doing well.”

The Reaffirmed Sentence

After DePape’s statement, Corley reaffirmed the 30-year prison sentence. U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey commented that the sentence reflected DePape’s “lack of remorse and contrition.”

The Pelosi Family’s Response

The Pelosi family released a brief statement following the original sentence: “The Pelosi family couldn’t be prouder of their Pop and his tremendous courage in saving his own life on the night of the attack and in testifying in this case.”

Background and Motive

DePape was convicted of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official.

During the trial, DePape admitted to the attack, intending to take Nancy Pelosi hostage and harm her. He viewed her as a symbol of government corruption.

A Sobering Statement from Paul Pelosi

In a written victim impact statement, Paul Pelosi described the lasting effects of the attack: “My life has been irrevocably changed.”

The resentencing hearing brought a sense of closure to this disturbing incident, with DePape’s apology serving as a reminder of the gravity of his actions.
