In an unprecedented move to combat the growing vaping epidemic among teens, a New York school district has deployed advanced vape detectors in middle school bathrooms.

Unveiling the FlySense FS300 System

The FlySense FS300 vape detectors, installed at Lindenhurst Middle School, possess the remarkable ability to detect both nicotine and THC. These sensors also boast sound detection capabilities, alerting school officials to potential fights or bullying.

Intelligent Algorithms

Powered by cutting-edge artificial intelligence algorithms, these devices can distinguish between harmless noises and aggressive behavior. Derek Peterson of Soter Technologies, the company behind the detectors, explains, “The devices use AI to differentiate between a door and toilet lid slam from when somebody is roughhousing in the bathroom.”

Ensuring Student Safety and Intervention

When the detectors sense anomalous activity, an immediate email is sent to Principal Frank Naccarato. Students caught vaping are promptly connected to professional intervention services.

“There’s still a consequence, but now we’ve added that education piece,” Naccarato says. “They also have to do a component of research based on vapes, how it hurts you.”

A Student-Inspired Initiative

The installation of these detectors is the result of a student’s initiative. Vanessa Probst, a 15-year-old student at Lindenhurst Middle School, expressed her concerns about the extent of vaping among her peers.

“I was doing research on it and I saw the side effects and how you can get popcorn lung, all the severe cancer you can get,” she told LA News Center.

Expanding the Reach

The success of the vape detectors at Lindenhurst Middle School has prompted plans to install them at Lindenhurst High School and other districts in the region.
