Drafting for Success: The Rams and Chargers Make Bold Moves in the 2024 NFL Draft

The 2024 NFL Draft concluded on Saturday, sending the brightest stars from the collegiate ranks to one of 32 new homes. Among them, the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers made their mark, selecting a combined 19 players to bolster their rosters.

Rams Reinforce Defense, Address Offensive Needs

With Aaron Donald retiring, the Rams’ defense was in need of reinforcements. They addressed this by selecting pass rusher Jared Verse from Florida State with their first pick, the 19th overall. Verse, a standout defensive end with 9 sacks in his senior year, will provide much-needed pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

The Rams’ next pick was another defensive lineman, Braden Fiske, also from Florida State. A transfer from Western Michigan, Fiske earned All-ACC honors during his last collegiate season.

Adding to their defensive depth, the Rams traded up in the third round to select Michigan running back Blake Corum, a surprise steal who fell further in the draft than many expected. Despite playing in a loaded backfield, Corum emerged as the school’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns and was named the Big Ten Running Back of the Year.

The Rams also addressed their offensive line by selecting Joe Alt, a highly touted tackle from Notre Dame. Alt, the son of former NFL lineman John Alt, is an All-American who was a finalist for the Outland Trophy.

Chargers Focus on Receivers and Linebackers

After a disappointing 2023 season, the Chargers used their draft picks to bolster their offense and defense. With their second-round pick, they acquired Ladd McConkey from Georgia, a dynamic wide receiver who won two national championships with the Bulldogs.

In the third round, the Chargers reunited with Michigan linebacker Junior Colson, who played for their current coach Jim Harbaugh. Colson led the Wolverines in tackles and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.

The Chargers also added three more receivers and two cornerbacks, addressing two areas of need. They selected wide receiver Brenden Rice from USC, son of NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, and Cornelius Johnson from Michigan.

Bright Futures Ahead

Both the Rams and Chargers have made strategic moves to improve their teams. The Rams have reinforced their defense and added depth to their offense, while the Chargers have focused on adding speed and playmaking ability. As these young prospects enter the NFL, they will look to make an immediate impact and help their teams climb to new heights.
