Unlock the Secret: Give Your Old Mattress a Responsible Farewell

4

Tired of tossing and turning on your aging mattress, only to wake up with aches and pains? It’s time for a comfortable upgrade! But what about the old, unloved mattress that’s been collecting dust in your spare room? Dumping it on the street corner is a major no-no, both environmentally and legally.

Thankfully, California has your back (and spine) with a free program that allows you to bid farewell to your unwanted mattress – and help the planet in the process.

75% Recycled, 0% Landfilled

Did you know that up to 75% of a mattress can be recycled? That’s right! Mattresses can be transformed into useful products like carpet padding, insulation, rebar, and even landscaping mulch. So, it’s a win-win situation: you get rid of your old mattress, and it doesn’t end up taking up precious space in our landfills.

Goodbye, Mattress! Hello, Easy Disposal

As a California resident, you have several convenient options to recycle your mattress and box spring through the Mattress Recycle Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program:

  • Retailer Take Back: California law mandates that any retailer selling mattresses offer no-cost disposal of your old mattress upon delivery of your new one. This applies even if you buy online!
  • Drop-off Locations: Over 230 drop-off spots are scattered across California where you can drop off your unwanted mattress or box spring without any fees.
  • Curbside Collection: Check with your local solid waste collector to see if they offer bulky item pickup that includes mattresses. Note that not all collectors participate in the Bye Bye Mattress program, but most provide at least one free large item pickup annually.

The Greenest Goodbye

Since its inception in California in 2016, the Bye Bye Mattress program has diverted over 11 million mattresses from landfills. In the past year alone, 99% of Californians had access to the program, and nearly 80% of discarded mattresses made their way to recycling facilities.

Not Just California

The Bye Bye Mattress program isn’t just a California thing! It’s also available in Connecticut and Rhode Island, so residents there can also dispose of their old mattresses responsibly.

Don’t let your old mattress be a pain in the neck. Recycle it with the Bye Bye Mattress program and give it the green goodbye it deserves. Your back, the environment, and your community will thank you for it.
