Julio Urias Sentenced in Domestic Battery Case

Los Angeles, Calif. – Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías has been sentenced to 36 months probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community labor after pleading no contest to misdemeanor domestic battery.

Urias’ sentence stems from an arrest in September 2023 on suspicion of domestic violence. He was initially charged with one count of spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of assault. Four of these charges were later dropped.

Sentence Conditions

In addition to probation and community labor, Urias must:

  • Complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling course
  • Pay a domestic violence fund fee
  • Refrain from possessing any weapons
  • Refrain from using any force or violence
  • Pay restitution to the victim
  • Abide by a protective order

Legal Process

After his arrest, Urías was placed on administrative leave by MLB. Police were alerted to the incident by a citizen who reported a physical altercation between a man and a woman. Urías was arrested by Department of Public Safety officers on felony suspicion of domestic violence.

The district attorney’s office subsequently filed a charge evaluation worksheet, which stated that Urías was arguing with his wife when he “pushed (her) against a fence and pulled her by the hair or shoulders.” However, the document further noted that “Neither the Victim’s injuries nor the Defendant’s criminal history justify a felony filing.”

MLB Investigation

MLB continues to investigate the case. No MLB player has ever been suspended twice for violating the league’s domestic violence policy.

Career Impact

Urías spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career with the Dodgers. He finished in third place in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2022 with an NL-best 2.16 ERA. He was seventh the previous year, when he led the majors with 20 wins.

The Dodgers filled the void left by Urías’ absence by signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the richest contract ever given to a pitcher and trading for Tyler Glasnow. They also acquired Shohei Ohtani, who is set to return to the mound in 2025.

Personal Statement

Urias has not publicly commented on the sentencing or the charges faced. However, he expressed remorse for his actions in a statement released through his attorney after the plea was entered:

“I deeply regret my actions and the pain I have caused. I am committed to learning from this experience and becoming a better person. I respect the court’s decision and will comply with all the conditions of my probation.”
