Unveiling the Depths of a Traumatic Journey

WNBA star Brittney Griner has courageously shared harrowing details of her 10-month ordeal during her imprisonment in a Russian penal colony. In an upcoming interview with ABC News’ “Good Morning America,” the two-time Olympic gold medalist candidly reveals her emotional struggles and the challenges she endured while in captivity.

“My Life is Over”: The Moment of Truth

Griner’s world shattered when, in February 2022, she was detained at a Russian airport after vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were discovered in her luggage. In that fleeting moment, she recalls thinking, “My life is over right here.”

She was transferred to a penal colony approximately 300 miles outside Moscow, where she began a torturous nine-year prison sentence. Living conditions were deplorable, leaving her feeling “less than a human.”

Battling Suicidal Thoughts

Griner’s mental health deteriorated as she grappled with the depths of her despair. “I didn’t think I could get through what I needed to get through,” she confides. The idea of ending her own life crossed her mind, but she mustered the strength to adopt a survivor mindset.

A Glimmer of Hope

In December 2022, fate intervened. Griner was released in a prisoner exchange for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. Reflecting on that moment, she remarks, “I was just so scared.”

Since her return home, Griner has gradually worked towards rebuilding her life. She hit the court with the Phoenix Mercury in May 2023, where she has been recognized for her remarkable All-Star performance.

Sharing Her Story in “Coming Home”

Griner’s upcoming memoir, “Coming Home,” scheduled for release on May 7th, delves into the harrowing details of her detainment, imprisonment, and eventual liberation. The book promises an intimate and unflinching account of her experiences.
