In a relentless battle, the teams exchanged blows for 13 grueling innings before darkness descended upon Pressly Field, forcing a suspension. With Midland clinging to a 3-2 lead in the top of the 14th, the marathon was put on hold.
Resumption of the Epic Struggle
The following day at 3 p.m., the rivals returned to Midland’s Zachery Field for the continuation of their epic duel. Odessa struck back immediately, tying the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 14th.
Undeterred, Midland refused to surrender. The game stretched on, inning after inning, with neither team able to gain an advantage. The crowd held their breath as the marathon stretched past the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st innings.
A Final Blow in the 23rd Inning
Finally, in the bottom of the 23rd inning, Wyatt Krueger’s RBI groundout drove in the winning run, giving Midland a hard-fought 4-3 victory.
Jake Nava, Midland’s ace pitcher, threw a masterful pitch to induce a groundout to end the game. He had given his all in a truly epic battle.
Historic Recognition
The 23-inning marathon tied the record for the third-longest game in high school baseball history. It was just two innings shy of the American high school record for the longest game ever played.
