Immediately after the crash, Jones reported severe pain in his back over his team radio. He was briefly examined at the in-field care center before being transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

On Tuesday, Legacy Motor Club, the team that Jones drives for, confirmed that the 26-year-old driver had suffered a broken bone in his lower back. This unfortunate injury will cause Jones to miss the upcoming Dover Motor Speedway race.

“Erik’s long-term health is our paramount priority,” said Jimmie Johnson, co-owner of Legacy Motor Club. “We want to ensure he has ample time to recover properly.”

In Jones’s absence, promising young driver Corey Heim will take over the reins of the No. 43 Toyota.
