Olympic Figure Skating Champion’s Surprising Post-Olympic Mission to Conquer Cancer

Scott Hamilton, a former American figure skater, devoted his early years to his sport, earning an incredible winning streak that included four consecutive U.S. titles and four consecutive world championships.

Hamilton’s dedication culminated in a triumphant gold medal performance at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Overcoming challenges throughout his life, including the loss of his mother to cancer at a young age, Hamilton’s mindset shifted, eventually leading him to a new purpose: funding cancer research.

A Mission for a Second Life

Plagued by health issues, Hamilton faced his biggest challenge in 1997 when diagnosed with testicular cancer. Years later, it returned along with two brain tumors. In 2016, he was again confronted with a brain tumor, but his approach had changed.

Embracing both western and holistic medicine, Hamilton poured himself into living a healthier life, including strengthening his faith. His tumor remarkably shrank, a testament to his indomitable spirit.

Hamilton believes that cancer patients should seek the best advice and educate themselves, a principle upon which he founded the Scott Hamilton CARES foundation in 2014.

The Power of Patient Care

Hamilton’s foundation focuses on funding immunotherapy and targeted therapy research to treat cancer while minimizing harm to patients.

“When we put our stake in the ground for immunotherapy, that was three years before the first immunotherapy drug came out,” Hamilton said. “So we know we were right.”

Through his foundation, Hamilton aims to ensure that everyone diagnosed with cancer has a chance at a second life, much like the one he has been given.

From Podium to Platform

Hamilton’s charitable endeavors have not gone unnoticed. Last month, he received the prestigious Gold Legacy Award at the Gold Meets Golden event.

“It’s a cool thing to be able to celebrate the excellence that comes from Olympic sport and to see what athletes do with their lives post podium,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton’s Olympic achievements have served as a springboard for his impactful work in the cancer community, leveraging the credibility that comes with winning a gold medal to raise awareness and funding.

Embracing Challenges, Cherishing Opportunities

Despite the rollercoaster of life experiences, Hamilton maintains a positive outlook.

“It feels like for every single moment, good or bad, to be considered an opportunity – that’s kind of where I’m really most grateful,” Hamilton said.

His journey has taught him invaluable lessons, allowing him to not only excel in sports but to make a profound difference in the lives of others affected by cancer.
