WNBA Superstar Calls for Pay Revolution: “It’s Not Overnight”

A Long-Term Commitment to Parity

Two-time WNBA champion Breanna Stewart remains optimistic about the prospect of significant changes when it comes to the league’s pay scale. However, she acknowledges the reality that such transformations take time.

“It’s not going to change overnight,” Stewart told People, emphasizing the dual approach of continuous on-court excellence and capitalizing on off-court opportunities.

The Role of Off-Court Endeavors

The compensation WNBA players receive has been a hot topic following the 2024 Draft. Caitlin Clark, the Iowa basketball sensation who was selected first overall, landed an eight-year deal with Nike worth up to million. While some NIL deals from her collegiate days will continue, it’s evident that off-court ventures play a significant role in players’ earnings.

Expansion and Economic Viability

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has expressed optimism about the league’s push towards higher salaries and private air travel. She recognized the importance of expanding the number of teams to increase revenue and make these improvements possible.

“You’ve got to build an economic model to fund everything they want,” Engelbert stated. “It’s important our players understand where our revenue comes from and where the expenses are going.”

A Milestone in Expansion

The league announced in October that the San Francisco Bay Area had been awarded an expansion team, scheduled to begin playing in 2025. The Atlanta Dream was the last team to join the WNBA in 2008.

“We are thrilled about expanding to the Bay Area and bringing the WNBA to a region with passionate basketball fans and a strong history of supporting women’s basketball,” said Engelbert.

Towards a Sustainable Future

The WNBA currently has 12 teams, with the Bay Area expansion team increasing the count to 13. Several other cities are under consideration for the 14th franchise, and Engelbert expressed confidence in reaching 16 teams by 2028.

Stewart’s hopes for sweeping changes in the WNBA pay scale may take time to materialize. However, with the league’s commitment to expansion, the increasing value of off-court ventures, and the collective efforts of players and executives, the future looks promising for the WNBA and its players.
