AOC vs. Columbia Rabbi: Clash Over Israel Protests

2

On Earth Day, amid messages of environmental activism, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) turned the spotlight on student-led protests echoing through college campuses nationwide, characterizing them as “peaceful” demonstrations. Her words came against the backdrop of a contentious situation unfolding at Columbia University and other Ivy League institutions, where anti-Israel protests have escalated, prompting concerns over campus safety.

In her Earth Day statement, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the power of youth activism, recognizing the impact of young people in shaping the nation’s future. She praised “the leadership of those peaceful student-led protests,” specifically mentioning campuses such as Columbia, Yale, and Berkeley.

Safety Concerns Rise at Columbia

Concurrently, the Orthodox rabbi at Columbia University and Barnard College, Rabbi David M. Buechler, issued a sobering message to Jewish students, recommending that they consider leaving campus and returning home for safety reasons. His recommendation stemmed from ongoing anti-Israel demonstrations involving agitators who have been seen expressing sympathy towards the terrorist group Hamas.

Rabbi Buechler’s statement sheds light on the heightened concerns for Jewish students: “The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy.”

Professor Shai Davidai, a Jewish faculty member at Columbia who has been vocal about calling out the school’s alleged inaction against antisemitism, demanded the National Guard’s intervention if the NYPD is unable to restore order. He characterized the situation as “a hostile takeover of the university” and “a showdown of support for Hamas on one hand and Western civilization on the other.”

Davidai expressed strong views against the protests, stating that they “have never been about human rights.” He accused demonstrators of justifying “rape as a means to a goal” and dismissed the protests as “not about human rights.”

A Widespread Trend of Campus Unrest

Columbia University’s situation echoes similar incidents at other Ivy League institutions and universities across the country, where anti-Israel protests have caused disruptions and raised safety concerns. These agitations have sparked heated debates, divided communities, and placed a strain on campus relations.

The demonstrations reflect a heightened passion and mobilization on college campuses, with young people exercising their voices on issues they deem crucial. However, the challenge lies in balancing the right to free speech and peaceful assembly with ensuring campus safety and maintaining academic integrity.

As the situation at Columbia and other campuses continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these institutions will navigate the challenges of addressing both student activism and campus safety.
