A festive block party in the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, turned into a scene of horror on Saturday night when a mass shooting left two people dead and six more wounded.
Unpermitted Gathering, Deadly Consequences
The shooting unfolded at around 7:19 p.m. at a block party that, according to police, had not received the necessary permit. As many as 300 people had gathered for the event.
Interim Police Chief CJ Davis addressed reporters at a news conference, describing the scene as “chaotic.” Officers responded to multiple crime scenes near Carnes Avenue and Grand Street, cordoning off the area for investigation.
Witnesses and Victims
Chief Davis confirmed that police are pursuing at least two suspects who allegedly opened fire during the party. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, creating panic among the crowd.
Of the eight victims, two men succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The remaining six were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
