A massive blaze has forced a crucial stretch of Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Connecticut, to be closed since Donnerstag morning, following an explosive tanker truck accident.
According to LA News Center, the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. involving multiple trucks and a passenger vehicle that resulted in a raging inferno beneath an overpass near exits 15 and 16.
Despite the terrifying spectacle, no one sustained serious injuries, a remarkable outcome according to Governor Ned Lamont.
**Intense Damage, Prolonged Closure**
The intensity of the damage has led Governor Lamont to declare a state of emergency. The highway, a critical artery just 20 miles from New York’s border, is anticipated to remain closed through least Monday due to an investigation, structural assessments, and reconstruction of the interstate and bridge.
“The extent of the damage to the overpass necessitates its demolition and repairs to the roadway,” Governor Lamont stated.
**National Support and Investigation**
The severity of the incident has prompted U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to offer assistance and acknowledge the ongoing efforts to clear the roadway.
“Our team is collaborating closely with Connecticut’s DOT regarding the tanker fire. Please adhere to local detours and avoid the area, if possible. Our gratitude goes out to first responders for their efforts,” Buttigieg said.
**Alternate Routes and Previous Tragedy**
While authorities determine when the road can safely re-open, travelers are advised to seek alternate routes.
Tragically, this is not the first incident of its kind on Interstate 95. In April 2023, a fatal accident took place in Groton when a tanker carrying fuel overturned, spilling thousands of gallons onto the highway. Governor Lamont attributed the incident to a blown-out passenger vehicle tire.
