In a courageous act, a 21-year-old female student at the University of Chicago (UChicago) disarmed a masked robbery suspect who threatened her with a gun while she was walking to class Wednesday afternoon.

Confrontation on University Avenue

Identified as Madi, the student was walking on South University Avenue when the suspect approached her and demanded her phone, according to WGN. Madi described the incident as a “blackout moment.”

  1. The suspect pointed a gun at Madi, triggering a struggle.
  2. Madi grabbed the suspect’s magazine, containing ammunition, and threw it into a nearby bush.
  3. She then ran to safety, leaving the suspect behind.

Captured on Camera

Footage captured by a security camera shows the brazen approach of the masked suspect, who walked up to Madi on the sidewalk in broad daylight.

University Responds

UChicago has enhanced security measures in the areas where several armed robberies have been reported on campus last week.

The university’s police department (UCPD) is collaborating with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to investigate the incidents and apprehend the suspects.

Campus Safety Ambassadors have also increased their presence to deter any further incidents.

Additional Arrests

The CPD has arrested two juvenile suspects, aged 16 and 17, in connection with a series of robberies near the UChicago campus. However, it is unclear if the suspect who confronted Madi was amongst those arrested.

The suspects face felony charges of armed robbery and aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle.

Student’s Perspective

Madi, while acknowledging the threat she faced, advised against fighting back for fear of losing one’s life over a material possession.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation is ongoing to identify the suspect involved in the robbery of Madi and to determine the connection between all the recent campus robberies.

The LA News Center will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
