A grandmother faces charges of orchestrating the gruesome murders of two Kansas women amid an ongoing child custody battle, court documents reveal.

Alleged Motive:

Investigators allege that 54-year-old Tifany Machel Adams and her accomplices aimed to gain custody of Veronica Butler’s two children. Butler was allowed supervised visitation with her kids, but was likely to be granted unsupervised visits shortly.

Shocking Discoveries:

  • Adams’ phone history exposed searches for “taser pain level” and the purchase of five tasers days before the women vanished.
  • Debris near Butler’s car suggested a “severe injury,” including blood and broken items.
  • A pistol magazine was found in Kelley’s purse, but the weapon remains missing.
  • The women’s bodies were discovered in a cow pasture on April 14.

Conspiracy Suspects:

Adams is charged alongside three accomplices: Tad Bert Cullum, Cole Twombly, and Cora Twombly. They face two counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy.

Disturbing Connections:

According to the affidavit, Adams told authorities that Butler canceled visitation on the day of the women’s disappearance. However, Butler’s phone records indicate she was actually picking up Kelley for the visit.

  • Rickman’s grandmother reported that Adams “knew the path the judge walked to work” and planned to “take out Veronica at drop off.”
  • The accused suspects belong to a religious anti-government group called “God’s Misfits.”

Chilling Testimony:

The Twombly’s 16-year-old daughter told police that she overheard conversations about Butler allegedly not protecting her children from sexual abuse.

  • The suspects allegedly told her, “Butler [was] not protecting her children from her brother.”
  • The daughter claimed Adams provided burner phones for communication during the plot.
  • The plan initially involved staging Butler’s death as an accident by throwing an anvil through her windshield.

Gruesome Discovery:

OSBI investigators traced the location of prepaid cellphones purchased by Adams to a site with “fresh dirt work.” There, they uncovered the women’s bodies.

  • The causes of death are pending a medical examiner’s report, but OSBI believes there’s “no chance” Butler and Kelley survived.

“This case is tragic,” said OSBI spokesperson Hunter McKee. “You have two people who are dead and four people who committed an absolutely brutal crime.”
