A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 struck southern Japan late Wednesday night, but no tsunami warnings have been issued, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Epicenter and Intensity

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Bungo Channel, a narrow strait separating the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. It hit Ehime and Kochi prefectures with an intensity of 6 on Japan’s 7-level intensity scale, causing shaking and rattling.

No Major Damage or Injuries

Thankfully, local media reports indicate that no major damage or injuries have been reported so far. The Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime prefecture, which is currently operating one reactor, has also reported no irregularities or safety concerns.

Seismically Active Japan

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Japan, one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The country experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or greater each year and accounts for about 20% of all earthquakes worldwide with a magnitude of 6 or greater.

2011 Earthquake and Tsunami

One of the most devastating earthquakes in recent Japanese history occurred on March 11, 2011. The magnitude 9 earthquake off the northeast coast triggered a massive tsunami that caused widespread destruction and loss of life. It also led to the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl, when the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was severely damaged.

Preparedness and Mitigation

Japan has invested heavily in earthquake preparedness and mitigation measures, such as building codes that require structures to withstand strong shaking, early warning systems, and public education campaigns. These efforts have played a significant role in minimizing the impact of earthquakes and protecting lives.

Ongoing Monitoring and Updates

The Japan Meteorological Agency and other relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing regular updates. Residents in the affected areas are advised to follow the official instructions and take appropriate precautions, including possible aftershocks.
