“And then there was ‘The Piranha Story,'” Sullivan laughs. During a fishing expedition in the Amazon rainforest, Sullivan found herself with a live piranha flopping on her lap, courtesy of a playful acquaintance. “I screamed, crashed onto the boat floor, and dragged my daughter down with me, while the piranha wriggled between us. It was utterly absurd!” Despite their initial revulsion, the family ended up cooking and eating the piranha that night, its ferocious jaws now aframed in their home.
Mistakes and Misguided Assumptions
Over the course of their travels, the Sullivans made their fair share of mistakes. One such misstep was following a travel agent’s suggestion to visit an orphanage in Vietnam. “We quickly realized the inappropriateness of such visits and felt terrible about it,” Sullivan confesses. “Exploiting children for tourism is irresponsible and exploitative.”
Another misconception they encountered was the persistent assumption of ample free time. With two young children in tow, the Sullivans found themselves constantly juggling responsibilities and chores, leaving little time for personal projects.
Unexpected Discoveries and Surprises
Despite the challenges, the family discovered unexpected joys and surprises. To their astonishment, they returned home with only half their bags filled. “You simply don’t need as much as you think,” Sullivan muses.
Another pleasant revelation was the transformation within their family dynamic. The usual parent-child hierarchy dissolved as they all navigated uncharted territories together. “My husband and I realized we didn’t have all the answers, and our children proved to be incredibly resourceful, brave, and curious,” Sullivan observes.
