Torrential Downpours Halt Flights at Dubai Airport

The United Arab Emirates experienced its heaviest rainfall on record, prompting the temporary closure of Dubai’s international airport, one of the busiest in the world. Travelers faced hours of delays and cancellations, as the airport’s tarmac and terminals were submerged in water. Road blockages and flooding made it impossible for many passengers to even reach the airport to catch their flights.

Weather Warning Leads to Citywide Shutdown

The relentless downpour brought over 100 mm of rain, breaking a 75-year record in the UAE. In the eastern emirate of Al Ain, the rainfall reached a staggering 254.8 mm (10 inches) in less than 24 hours. The government issued a red warning, forcing the closure of offices, schools, and banks nationwide. Citizens were urged to stay home and avoid flood-prone areas.

Infrastructure Overwhelmed by Runoff

The heavy rainfall and runoff caused widespread flooding across Dubai. The mall and metro system were both inundated, and videos showed cars floating on flooded roads in many parts of the city. The main road connecting Dubai to Abu Dhabi, the capital, was also gridlocked due to the high water levels.

Emergency Response in Full Swing

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Authority advised residents to take precautions to protect against property damage from the downpour and hailstorms. Emergency services were on high alert, responding to reports of flooding and other weather-related incidents.

Regional Impact of Storms

The storms also affected other parts of the Middle East. In Oman, at least 18 people were reported dead as a result of the severe flooding. The heavy rainfall caused widespread damage and disruption in other countries in the region as well.

Advice to Travelers

Dubai International Airport has advised passengers to only go to the airport “unless absolutely necessary.” Emirates has suspended check-in for all flights departing between 8 a.m. local time and midnight on Wednesday. Fly Dubai has also canceled all flights from the UAE hub until 10 a.m. local time on April 17 due to the extreme weather conditions.
