Prepare to be captivated by the upcoming Met Gala’s enchanting theme, inspired by the beloved fairy tale, “Sleeping Beauty.” This year’s grand event will center around the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest exhibition, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The exhibition and, by extension, the Met Gala, are set to embark on a sensory journey, exploring the ways in which fashion can transcend mere visual appeal and engage all our senses.

Sensory Reawakening of Fashion at the Met

Curator Andrew Bolton eloquently explains, “When an item of clothing enters our collection, its status is irrevocably altered. What was once a vital part of a person’s experience now becomes a motionless ‘artwork’ that can no longer be worn, heard, touched, or smelled. The exhibition endeavors to reanimate these artworks by re-awakening their sensory capacities through technology.” By appealing to our full range of senses, the exhibition aims to connect us with the garments on display in a way that honors their original purpose – vibrant, dynamic, and brimming with life.

“The Garden of Time” and its Connection to “Sleeping Beauty”

The Met Gala dress code, aptly named “The Garden of Time,” is loosely based on the exhibition’s theme. While interpretations vary from guest to guest, the code provides ample room for creativity and expression, resulting in the iconic red carpet moments that the Met Gala is known for.

Celebrating the “Sleeping Beauties” Exhibition

The “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition will showcase approximately 250 garments from the Costume Institute’s vast collection of over 33,000 pieces, many of which are rarely displayed due to their delicate nature. These garments, like Sleeping Beauty herself, will lay in glass cases, inviting visitors to contemplate their intricate details and craftsmanship.

The exhibition’s design is equally captivating. Galleries will be arranged according to themes inspired by the natural world, fostering a multisensory experience. Imagine floors animated with slithering snakes in one space and a ceiling adorned with a fluttering projection of birds in another.

In a departure from tradition, “Sleeping Beauties” will feature a display of “sleeping beauties” – garments too fragile to be dressed on mannequins. These treasures will be encased in glass “coffins,” allowing visitors an intimate glimpse into the intricate details and varying states of preservation, as if examining them under a microscope. Max Hollein, Met Museum Director, enthusiastically explains, “The exhibition will push the boundaries of our imagination and invite us to experience the multisensory facets of garments, typically lost when entering a museum collection.” By bringing these pieces to life, the Met Gala aims to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the artistry and beauty that defines fashion.

Memorable Met Gala Themes of the Past

Over the years, the Met Gala has showcased a diverse array of captivating themes. From last year’s celebration of the legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld to the 2021-2022 exploration of American fashion in “In America,” each theme has left an unforgettable mark on the fashion world.

Notable past themes include the pandemic-postponed “About Time: Fashion and Duration” in 2020 and the экстравагант “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in 2019. Each year, the Met Gala offers a platform for extraordinary artistic expression and creativity.

Stay tuned for coverage of the Met Gala 2024 on Monday night in New York City, where the theme “The Garden of Time” will undoubtedly inspire imaginative and captivating ensembles on the red carpet.
