Kitchen Clinic: A Culinary Journey for LAUSD Students
Garcia recently visited the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies in Tarzana as part of his collaboration with Common Threads, a nonprofit that empowers young people through nutrition education and community health initiatives. Garcia is an active member of the nonprofit’s national board.
Kitchen Clinic, a flagship program of Common Threads, immerses LAUSD students in a hands-on kitchen experience for 10 weeks. Students experiment with diverse recipes, delve into the medicinal properties of foods, and engage with healthcare professionals to gain insights into the inextricable link between nutrition and overall well-being.
Linda Novick O’Keefe: A Champion for Culinary Literacy
Garcia joined forces with Linda Novick O’Keefe, Common Threads’ co-founder and CEO, to witness the culinary sparks ignited within the Kitchen Clinic students. O’Keefe emphasized the importance of fostering intentional dietary choices and empowering students to make healthy decisions for themselves and their families.
“Our health is directly shaped by what we consume,” Novick O’Keefe exclaimed.
Culinary Medicine and Career Pathways
The Kitchen Clinic program extends beyond cooking skills. It also exposes students to career opportunities in hospitality and healthcare, where culinary medicine is emerging as a powerful tool for improving patient outcomes. Currently, half of the participants transition into paid chef instructor assistant roles, guiding elementary students in their culinary discoveries.
Common Threads: A Legacy of Impact
Although Kitchen Clinic is a relatively young initiative, Common Threads has established a two-decade legacy of partnership with LAUSD. The nonprofit has impacted over 750 schools and community organizations across ten major U.S. cities.
