Curbing Teen Mayhem: New Chaperone Policy at South Bay Mall

6

The Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance has announced a new chaperone policy effective March 1st, requiring minors under the age of 18 to be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older on Friday and Saturday evenings.

This policy change comes in response to a massive brawl that occurred in December 2023, involving approximately 1,000 juveniles who looted and damaged the shopping mall.

Under the new policy, up to four minors can be accompanied by a single adult, who must remain with them at all times. Mall employees will have the authority to request identification from guests to verify age. Acceptable forms of ID include a photograph and date of birth.

Those unable to provide valid identification may be denied entry or asked to leave the premises. Security at the Del Amo Fashion Center has been increased since the December incident, and the new chaperone policy is a further measure to enhance safety for shoppers and employees alike.

Following the brawl, mall representatives consulted with local residents and community leaders to develop a policy that would address concerns about unsupervised minors while allowing teenagers to continue enjoying the mall’s offerings.

The Del Amo Fashion Center is the largest enclosed mall in the South Bay area, with over 200 stores and restaurants. It is a popular destination for both local and out-of-town shoppers.
