Sinkhole-Stricken Chatsworth Road Roars Back to Life

A yearlong saga comes to an end as Iverson Road in Chatsworth prepares to welcome vehicles once again. The road was abruptly closed in January 2023 when a gaping sinkhole swallowed two cars and stranded a mother and daughter within its depths.

Faced with the relentless onslaught of torrential rain, rescue crews worked tirelessly around the clock to stabilize the sinkhole, their efforts seemingly futile as it continued to expand. But now, thanks to a .2 million repair project, Iverson Road is set to reopen to the delight of local residents and commuters alike.

“Caltrans is thrilled to restore access to Iverson Road,” exclaimed Gloria Roberts, director of Caltrans District 7. “This emergency repair project underscores our unwavering commitment to safety and maintaining our infrastructure to the highest standards.”

A Wildlife Haven Amidst Construction

Throughout the construction, nature provided unexpected encounters. Workers were greeted by mountain lions, bobcats, and snakes prowling near the worksite, while birds attempted to nest in the underpass, prompting crews to install a protective chicken wire fence.

Safety First: A Reminder from the Sinkhole

The January sinkhole incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of caution in the face of uncertain road conditions. Four individuals initially became trapped, with two managing to escape on their own. Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department courageously rescued the remaining mother and daughter, who sustained minor injuries.

“Motorists should never attempt to drive through areas where pavement visibility is compromised,” emphasized officials.

The Long Wait Ends

Iverson Road is scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m. Wednesday, although it may open earlier if work concludes ahead of schedule. Final construction and landscaping touches will complete the project.

“Patience and understanding” was the watchword for officials as they thanked the public for enduring this prolonged closure. And now, the wait is over, as the road regains its functionality, connecting Chatsworth residents and commuters to their destination with renewed ease.
