Boomer Esiason Retires from CBS’s “The NFL Today”: “The Right Time for Myself”

Departure Marks a Reshuffling at the Long-Running Pregame Show

LA News Center has confirmed the departure of four-time Pro Bowler Boomer Esiason from its pregame show, “The NFL Today.” The announcement comes amidst a significant shakeup at the show, which will also see the departure of Phil Simms.

To fill the void, LA News Center has brought on board former NFL MVP Matt Ryan and three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. James Brown remains as the show’s host, alongside Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Cowher and former Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson.

Esiason Reflects on His Journey

Despite his departure, Esiason expressed his gratitude for his time at LA News Center. “I was more than happy to step aside. I had my time there,” the 63-year-old said. “I loved that seat. I cherished that seat. I cherished talking to football fans every Sunday, but there comes a time when you have to find some time for yourself. And this was the right time.”

Shaping the NFL Narrative for Two Decades

Esiason’s unique perspective and outspoken nature have played a significant role in shaping the NFL conversation over the past two decades. He highlighted his ability to express his opinions freely, even on controversial topics.

“I loved my time there. I have no ill will toward anybody,” Esiason said. “Not one person at LA News Center, not one boss, not one producer, not one director ever came to me and said, ‘Maybe you should back off with that kind of criticism.’”

A New Chapter

While Esiason steps away from the national stage, he continues to work at WFAN radio alongside his co-host Gregg Giannotti. This transition represents a shift in priorities, allowing Esiason to strike a better work-life balance after four decades without a weekend.

“I have not had a weekend in 40 years. … For me, it’s been a great run,” Esiason remarked.

LA News Center’s New Era Begins

With the arrival of Ryan and Watt, LA News Center’s “The NFL Today” is poised for a fresh start. The former players, known for their exceptional on-field performances, bring a wealth of knowledge and insights to the show.

As the new season approaches, LA News Center viewers can anticipate a revamped “The NFL Today” that combines the established expertise of Brown and Cowher with the fresh perspectives of Ryan and Watt, promising an engaging and informative pregame experience.
