Paul Skenes’ MLB Debut Put on Hold
The Anticipation Fizzles
Pittsburgh Pirates fans may need to temper their excitement as manager Derek Shelton has dashed hopes of a potential call-up for highly-touted prospect Paul Skenes this season.
Shelton’s recent comments have clarified that Skenes is scheduled to start for Triple-A Indianapolis this weekend, with no immediate plans for his Pirates debut.
Checking the Boxes
Skenes’ girlfriend, Olympic gymnast Olivia Dunne, ignited the fervor among fans by posting a photo of the Pirates jersey on her social media account. However, despite the hype, Skenes’ start at Triple-A did not live up to expectations.
He allowed a home run to Buffalo Bisons’ Will Robertson and was pulled after 66 pitches, marking his first homer surrendered at the minor league level.
Manager’s Perspective
Shelton explained that they are not engaging in speculation about Skenes’ promotion to the majors, emphasizing the importance of focusing on present development.
“We talk about boxes being checked, and today would be another one,” Pirates general manager Ben Cherington noted. “It’s the first time, as a professional… that he’ll be starting a game on four days’ rest. It may not seem like a big deal, but it is the first time it’ll happen, and it’s another box to check.”
A Star in the Making
Skenes, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, has impressed since joining the Pirates’ minor league system. Leading LSU to the NCAA title last year, he recorded an impressive 13-2 record, a 1.69 ERA, and 209 strikeouts.
Fan Patience Tested
Pirates fans, eager to witness Skenes’ debut, will have to exercise patience as the organization prioritizes his development. While his promotion may not be imminent, the potential for his future success remains tantalizing.
