Steelers’ Quarterback Carousel Continues: Justin Fields Traded, Russell Wilson Veteran Opt-Out

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves once again in the spotlight of quarterback news, as they welcome Justin Fields to their team following a low-risk trade with the Chicago Bears.

However, despite the acquisition of Fields, the Steelers have made headlines with a decision to not extend his fifth-year option, worth a hefty million.

An Interesting Quarterback Room Dynamic

The Steelers’ decision to bring aboard Fields comes on the heels of signing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the league minimum of .21 million. This sets the stage for an intriguing competition between the two quarterbacks.

Head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged Wilson’s experience but emphasized Fields’ opportunity to fight for the starting role.

“We’re not resistant to competition, but as I’ve mentioned several times of late, I just think it’s appropriate to establish positioning. …
Russell has pole position.”

Tomlin explained his reasoning, citing Wilson’s extensive NFL experience and refined processes. He believes that Wilson’s experience during the offseason will be valuable.

Justin Fields’ Journey

Traded from the Chicago Bears after three seasons, Justin Fields brings a solid track record with him to Pittsburgh. In his time with Chicago, he completed 578 of 958 passes for 6,674 yards, with 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

However, Fields has only one 300-yard passing game to his credit in his career.

Steelers’ Overhaul

The Pittsburgh Steelers have undergone a significant transformation in their quarterback room recently. Following Wilson’s arrival, Kenny Pickett requested a trade, Mitch Trubisky was released, and Mason Rudolph signed with the Tennessee Titans.

The Steelers’ decision on Fields’ fifth-year option will undoubtedly be a hot topic as the season draws near. With Russell Wilson’s experience and Fields’ potential, the competition for the starting role in Pittsburgh is sure to be one of the most intriguing storylines in the NFL this year.
