As recently as the start of the 2023 college season, Michigan’s young quarterback was an afterthought, far from the radar of NFL teams. However, in recent weeks, his draft stock skyrocketed, culminating in his college head coach’s bold prediction that McCarthy would be the first quarterback selected.

However, the shocking selection of Michael Penix Jr. by the Atlanta Falcons at No. 8 appeared to force the Vikings’ hand, with Minnesota swiftly sending No. 11, a fourth-rounder, and a fifth-rounder to move up one spot.

Despite his impressive stats, some scouts and analysts question whether McCarthy possesses the intangibles to lead an NFL team. Some point to his pedestrian performance in the national championship game, where he posted a lackluster 10-for-18 passing with zero touchdowns.
However, McCarthy’s biggest critic may be his own head coach. Jim Harbaugh, after originally predicting McCarthy to be the first quarterback drafted, recently admitted he “might be wrong” about McCarthy’s NFL prospects.
Regardless of the doubts, McCarthy finds himself in a prime position with the Vikings. He will have the opportunity to develop alongside star wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, with tight end T.J. Hockenson expected to return from injury.
