In a heartwarming rescue, a quick-thinking state police officer in Michigan used a stranded man’s dog to save him after he fell through the ice on a frozen lake. Bystanders called 911 when the 65-year-old man fell into ice-covered Arbutus Lake in Traverse City, and Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Kammeron Bennetts was there to help.

A Heroic Rescue Caught on Camera

The entire rescue was captured on Officer Bennetts’ body camera. The footage showed the man struggling to stay afloat in freezing water, with only his head and shoulders above the thin ice. His loyal dog, Ruby, stood by his side, refusing to leave him.

Officer Bennetts first attempted to throw a rescue disc attached to a rope out to the man. Unfortunately, it didn’t reach him. Thinking quickly, he asked the man to send Ruby to him for assistance.

“Send your pup here. Will she come to me?” Officer Bennetts yelled, to which the man replied that his dog’s name was Ruby.

Officer Bennetts called for Ruby, whistling and shouting, “Ruby come here! Come here Ruby!” The loyal canine raced towards him with her tail wagging. The officer then securely tied the rescue disc to Ruby’s collar and asked the man to call her back.

When Ruby returned to her owner, Officer Bennetts instructed the man to take the disc from her and start kicking his legs. With the officer pulling on the rope, the man was able to bring his feet up to the surface and eventually onto the icy surface of the lake. They made their way to safer ice near the lake’s edge, where a local firefighter and Officer Bennetts grabbed the man’s arms to complete the rescue. Throughout the entire ordeal, Ruby remained attached to the rope, playing a crucial role in her owner’s survival.

A Lucky Escape

The man was immediately taken to a hospital by ambulance for treatment but was later released. Michigan State Police celebrated the successful rescue in a tweet, commending Officer Bennetts and Ruby for their incredible teamwork.

“What a good girl!!! Amazing ice rescue from 7th District, MCO Bennetts. Creative thinking helped save a life!! EXCELLENT JOB MCO Bennetts and RUBY!!” the tweet read.
