Drive Me Crazy: Stick Shift Thwarts Thief’s Ambitions

A Colorado woman’s grand theft auto plans went awry when she found herself behind the wheel of a stick shift vehicle. Cue the Keystone Cops-style antics.

Stick Shift FOILS Car Theft

The Boulder Police Department (BPD) is saluting the triumph of “Stick Shift FTW” after a vehicular heist attempt went up in smoke. “Not a standard recommendation for car theft prevention, but this past Friday a stick shift kept a thief from getting far in a stolen car,” they quipped.

26-year-old Amber Davis quickly went from fresh out of jail to back behind bars after her inability to handle the intricacies of a manual transmission led to a comical crash with a fire hydrant.

Caught in the Act

Responding to a call at 4:30 p.m. on May 3, BPD identified Davis as the suspect behind the misadventure. Authorities revealed that the newly released Davis had just stepped into the scene when she spotted the unattended truck with keys in the ignition, tempting her to seize the opportunity.

Her plan hit a roadblock—quite literally—when she realized her lack of knowledge in operating a stick shift vehicle.

The Perils of Manual Trannies

Imagine her dismay as she wrestled with the gears, lurching forward and backward before inevitably crashing into the unsuspecting fire hydrant. Thankfully, no humans were harmed in the process.

The truck was promptly returned to its rightful owner, much to everyone’s relief. BPD couldn’t help but relish the irony, “Thankfully, no one was injured, and the truck was quickly returned to its rightful owner.”

Charged with Careless Driving

While Davis’ stick shift struggles may have provided some comic relief, it did not absolve her of responsibility. She now faces multiple charges, including felony second degree motor vehicle theft, careless driving, driving without a valid license, and failing to report an accident involving an unattended vehicle.

This incident serves as a comical reminder that not all crime plans are created equal. And that sticking to automatic transmissions might be advisable when contemplating a life of crime.
