Tragedy in Burbank: Kindergarten Teacher Murdered by Her Son

A beloved kindergarten teacher in Burbank, California, Karyn Lombardo, was tragically killed in her own home on Tuesday evening.

A Devastating Loss

Lombardo, 57, was a long-time and adored teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School. She was known for her dedication to her students, her infectious enthusiasm, and her unwavering belief in every child’s potential.

On Tuesday night, shortly after 10 p.m., police responded to a call of an altercation at Lombardo’s residence. Upon arrival, they found her deceased. Her adult son, 25-year-old Kyle Lombardo, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

A Family’s Heartache

Vince Lombardo, Karyn’s husband, expressed his profound grief and despair in a heartbreaking interview with KTLA.

“She loved him more than anything and tried to help him,” he said of his wife, “All of her students love her. There were students who became teachers because of her. She’s a very magnificent person and I think if you ask anybody, I think she’s too kind and that she loves to a fault.”

Vince highlighted the years of mental health struggles Kyle faced and the challenges of getting the support he needed. He lamented the lack of resources and the systemic obstacles that often make it difficult for adults with mental illness to receive the care they require.

A Community in Mourning

The Burbank Unified School District Superintendent, John Paramo, shared his condolences and paid tribute to Lombardo’s exceptional career.

“Karyn Lombardo touched the lives of thousands of students, parents, and colleagues during her 30-year career at Bret Harte Elementary School,” Paramo said. “Her dedication, warmth, and passion for teaching touched many students and colleagues’ lives. Her profound impact and loss on this community will be deeply felt throughout the City of Burbank.”

Current and former students, parents, and friends expressed their shock, sadness, and gratitude for the impact Lombardo had on their lives.

“She would always tell us that if we were down, just to love ourselves and to talk to our parents about it,” said Zoe Bautista, a former student.

A growing memorial of flowers, notes, and tributes could be seen outside Bret Harte Elementary School, a testament to the love and respect Lombardo earned throughout her community.

As the investigation continues, the Burbank community grapples with the loss of such a dedicated and beloved teacher. Karyn Lombardo’s memory will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives she enriched with her passion for education and the kindness she extended to all.
