From Embracing European Charm to Living a Fulfilling Life Abroad: An Expat’s Journey

Jessica van Dop DeJesus and her husband Martin embarked on a remarkable adventure that led them from the bustling city of Brussels to the tranquil shores of Puerto Rico. Their journey is a captivating tale of love, family, and the pursuit of a life well-lived.

Fateful Encounters and Dreams of Europe

In 2012, fate brought Jessica and Martin together at a neighborhood farmer’s market in Brussels. Their paths intertwined as sparks flew, igniting a whirlwind romance that blossomed into marriage. Driven by a shared dream of returning to Europe, they patiently planned their escape from the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C.

Finding ‘the One’ in Belgium’s Heart

As the pandemic subsided, Jessica and Martin seized the opportunity to rediscover their beloved Brussels. Guided by their desire to be closer to family, they meticulously searched for their next home, guided by two non-negotiable criteria: proximity to their daughter’s school and a spacious outdoor area.

After an extensive six-month search, they stumbled upon the perfect apartment in Saint Gilles, a vibrant neighborhood that held special significance for Jessica. Its soaring 14-foot ceilings, Art Nouveau charm, and abundant greenery captured their hearts.

A Home Away from Home: Inside Their Brussels Apartment

Jessica and her family reside in a cozy duplex that seamlessly blends their American and European sensibilities. The dining room, adorned with a grand long table, sets the stage for memorable dinner parties, while the living room magically transforms into a fitness haven with a stationary bike and weights.

The kitchen, equipped with an American-style stove and oven, allows Jessica to indulge her passion for cooking. Terrazzo floors, reminiscent of her childhood home in Puerto Rico, add a touch of nostalgia.

Towards the rear of the first floor, an ingenious room serves dual purposes as an office and sitting area. Sliding doors reveal a two-level terrace, one featuring a spacious table for outdoor dining. “In the warmer months, we relish the beautiful view of the city hall from our terrace,” Jessica exclaims.

The bedrooms, laundry room, storage, and bathroom occupy the lower level. Despite Europe’s infamous lack of storage, the former owners cleverly created a storage system under the stairs, housing everything from clothing and household items to wines and photography equipment.

Their monthly housing expenses total ,046, including mortgage, condo fees, and utilities. Jessica acknowledges, “We certainly appreciate the lower housing costs compared to D.C. and the Netherlands.”

The Vibrant Tapestry of Brussels

Brussels has embraced Jessica and her family with open arms. Saint Gilles, their beloved neighborhood, is a melting pot of cultures, offering a diverse array of restaurants, shops, and a vibrant Latino community.

As a “half-Dutch, half-Puerto Rican, third-culture kid,” Jessica’s daughter is thriving in the city’s rich tapestry. The close proximity to other European nations allows the family to embark on enriching weekend trips, immersing themselves in new languages and traditions.

Reflecting on their journey, Jessica concludes, “Life abroad has brought us a newfound appreciation for the smaller things. Here, we embrace a slower pace of life and a culture that values friendship, relaxation, and travel just as much as work.
