101 Freeway Shutdown: Wildlife Crossing Bridge Coming to Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills is gearing up for a major undertaking: the construction of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing Bridge, poised to be the largest of its kind in the nation.

101 Freeway Closure: Plan Ahead

To facilitate the massive construction efforts, the southbound lanes of the 101 Freeway will be closed between Chesebro Road and Liberty Canyon Road from midnight to 5 a.m. every weekday, starting April 15th. Travelers and commuters are advised to anticipate detours and plan alternative routes during these hours.

Reuniting Natural Landscapes: Bridging the Divide

The wildlife crossing bridge, stretching over 200 feet in length and 165 feet in width, will create a vital connection between the Santa Susana and Santa Monica mountain ranges, which have been severed by the busy 101 Freeway. This innovative solution will provide a safe passage for wildlife, including mountain lions, bobcats, and coyotes, to roam and interact between their natural habitats.

Minimizing Inbreeding and Enhancing Wildlife Health

The wildlife crossing not only provides a physical connection but also addresses a critical issue: inbreeding among wildlife populations. Mountain lions are known to avoid crossing the dangerous highway, resulting in isolated groups and increased risk of genetic disorders. The bridge will allow these animals to safely move between habitats, fostering gene flow and improving the overall health of the species.

A Milestone in Infrastructure and Conservation

This project, boasting a whopping budget of million, is not just a transportation initiative but also a significant conservation effort. Once completed in 2025, the wildlife crossing will be an emblem of the community’s commitment to protecting the local ecosystem and preserving the rich biodiversity of the Santa Monica Mountains.

“We have the science that shows wildlife come right up to the 101,” said Agoura Hills Mayor Illece Buckley Weber. “But they’re smart enough not to cross, and that’s one of the problems. We need them to cross back and forth between the Santa Monica Mountains.”

Community Impact and Safety Considerations

The construction may result in increased traffic during early morning hours, particularly on Agoura Road. Public Works Director Jessica Forte urges residents to stay alert while running or biking near the construction site.
