Dave Duell, a dedicated long-haul truck driver from Portland, Oregon, recently endured an extraordinary trial that has left him recuperating from severe injuries. While navigating his usual Medford commute, Duell’s life took an unexpected and perilous turn when a massive turkey collided with his windshield.
The Avian Assault
As Duell drove his semi-truck and triple trailer combination southbound, a large turkey emerged from a grassy median, charging directly into his truck’s path. The impact was so forceful that it shattered the windshield into pieces, sending glass shards flying into the cabin. Tragically, the bird pierced through Duell’s windshield, striking him on the left side of his face.
The impact rendered Duell unconscious, and with no control over his vehicle, it veered off the road and crashed into a small tree. The crash activated the truck’s emergency beacon, summoning aid from authorities.
A Life Flight to Safety
Responding swiftly to the emergency call, Oregon State Police and emergency medical services rushed to the scene. Duell’s injuries, which included severe head trauma, required immediate medical attention.
After being transported to a local hospital via Life Flight, Duell underwent extensive medical assessments and treatment. His daughter, Emily-Jean Duell, described her father’s determination and resilience during this challenging time.
A Journey of Recovery and Support
“He’s doing remarkably well,” Emily-Jean said of her father’s condition. “The swelling has subsided considerably, and he can speak clearly. He also has vision in his eye.”
To support Dave during his recovery, his coworkers have set up a GoFundMe campaign, which has received the family’s blessings.
“We are incredibly grateful for their gesture of support,” Emily-Jean explained. “Dave’s wages have been significantly reduced as he transitions to worker’s compensation. The additional funds will help cover essential expenses as he focuses on his recovery.”
While Dave has been discharged from the hospital, he continues to wear an eyepatch in preparation for upcoming surgery. His family remains hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.
