**Minnesota Senator Maintains Silence on Burglary Charges, Ethics Panel Divided**

Democratic Minnesota state Senator Nicole Mitchell declined to testify before an ethics panel on Tuesday, invoking her Fifth Amendment rights regarding the burglary charge she faces for allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s home last month.

Mitchell Refuses to Speak

The ethics panel, consisting of two Democrats and two Republicans, heard testimony from Mitchell’s appearance but was unable to question her directly. Mitchell’s decision to invoke her right to remain silent has left the panel divided on her future in the legislature.

“Senator Nicole Mitchell’s actions are a clear violation of Senate rules and leave the Minnesota Senate under a cloud of distrust,” declared Republican Senator Eric Lucero.

Calls for Further Investigation

Democratic Senator Bobby Joe Champion, who chairs the panel, urged caution and the need for a more thorough investigation before taking any action against Mitchell.

“The prudent thing to do is to wait until the evidence can be tested for accuracy,” Champion stated.

Background of the Allegation

Mitchell was arrested on April 22nd at her stepmother’s home and subsequently charged with first-degree burglary. The senator has denied the allegations, claiming she was merely checking on her ill father’s belongings.

According to the criminal complaint, Mitchell acknowledged entering the property through a window and claimed she was seeking to retrieve her late father’s ashes, photos, and other sentimental items. However, her stepmother insists that Mitchell was denied access to these items.

Political Career and Legal Defense

Mitchell was elected to the state Senate in 2022, representing District 47. Prior to entering politics, she worked as a meteorologist for KSTP-TV and Minnesota Public Radio, and currently holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard.

One of Mitchell’s attorneys, Bruce Ringstrom Jr., indicated that she may enter a plea at her next court hearing, scheduled for June 10th. However, he noted that the proceedings could be delayed.

Ethics Panel’s Decision

Given the lack of Mitchell’s testimony and the need for further investigation, the ethics panel has decided to postpone any future action until after the adjournment deadline for the legislative session on May 20th.
