Patriots Newbie Milton Firm in Quarterback Role Amidst Position Change Speculations

The New England Patriots boldly drafted two up-and-coming quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft, securing the overall No. 3 pick Drake Maye and bringing on sixth-round selection Joe Milton from the University of Tennessee.

Recent whispers have suggested that Milton might consider a position switch in the NFL, given his undeniable athleticism and impressive footwork. This speculation reached a fever pitch when he joined the Patriots, who are clearly prioritizing Maye as the top dog heading into training camp with hopes of making him the starting quarterback in Foxborough.

A Crowded Patriots QB Field

Beyond Maye, Milton must vie for a roster spot amidst a crowded Patriots quarterback room that includes seasoned veteran Jacoby Brissett, up-and-comer Bailey Zappe, and the enigmatic Nathan Rourke.

Milton’s Unwavering Stance

Despite the speculation and the intense competition for the starting role, Milton remains steadfast in his pursuit of the quarterback position. When asked if he would consider a move to tight end, Milton unequivocally stated, “You are the first person I have actually heard that from, to be real with you. But, that will never happen.”

A Tumultuous College Journey

Milton spent six years navigating the tumultuous waters of college football, starting his journey with the Michigan Wolverines. During his three-year stint there, injuries and underwhelming performances plagued him, with the added obstacle of the COVID-19 pandemic further hindering his progress.

Undeterred, Milton transferred to Tennessee in 2021, earning the starting role over the highly touted Hendon Hooker. However, injuries once again sidelined him, and Hooker eventually seized the starting reigns.

The 2023 season marked Milton’s only full year with the Volunteers, where he showcased his abilities, throwing for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just five interceptions in 12 games. He also displayed his elusiveness, rushing for 299 yards and seven touchdowns on 78 attempts.

A Determined Milton

Playing time may be scarce for Milton given the Patriots’ current quarterback situation, but he remains resolute in his dream. Instead of seeking alternative paths to the field, he is laser-focused on carving out his destiny as a quarterback in the NFL.
