Aspiring Young Healers: A Day in the Life of Mini Medical School

Imagine yourself as a medical professional, skillfully performing examinations and unraveling the mysteries of the human body. For over 50 seventh-graders from Northridge Middle School, this dream became a reality thanks to the captivating “Mini Medical School.”

Stepping into the Realm of Medicine

On a bright Wednesday morning, the students embarked on an extraordinary journey at Dignity Health Medical Group’s Urgent Care Family Practice in Northridge. There, they were greeted by a team of enthusiastic physicians and staff volunteers eagerly sharing their expertise.

The young explorers delved into cutting-edge medical equipment, marveling at its precision. They explored the wonders of X-rays, peered through microscopic lenses during ultrasounds, and even got their hands on a state-of-the-art blood pressure monitor. These hands-on experiences ignited a spark of curiosity within the budding healers.

Beyond the technical aspects of medicine, the students discovered the importance of compassion and communication. They learned how to bandage a sprain, a skill that could prove invaluable in their daily lives. Additionally, they gained a newfound appreciation for the complexities of the human body as they identified various organs and their functions.

Purpose and Impact

Colleen Warnesky, coordinator of behavioral health at Northridge Family Medicine, emphasized the purpose of the program: to ignite a passion for healthcare in the students’ hearts.

“We aimed to expose these young minds to the medical profession and plant the seeds of future careers in the healthcare field,” Warnesky said.

But the benefits extended far beyond career aspirations. The students also learned the significance of healthy living, understanding the connection between nutrition and preventative care. This invaluable information empowers them to make informed choices that promote their well-being.

Concluding this immersive experience, the participants received their certificates of completion, filled with pride and a newfound confidence in exploring the world of medicine. The organizers hope that these young medical enthusiasts will continue to pursue their passion, shaping the future of healthcare with their dedication and compassion.

In addition to the hands-on activities, the students benefited from interactions with the Dignity Health Medical Group/Family Medicine Residency program residents. This exposure helped destigmatize medical visits, fostering a positive attitude towards seeking medical assistance and promoting self-care among the students.

The Mini Medical School is a testament to the transformative power of education when it is designed to engage and inspire. This innovative program at Dignity Health Northridge Hospital and Dignity Health Medical Group has the potential to shape the lives of countless aspiring young healers, guiding them towards fulfilling careers in the service of others.
