Authorities are actively seeking information after a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) recruit was fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision on the 101 Freeway early Monday morning.

A Promising Life Cut Short

Jacob Fuerte, a 22-year-old recruit, was driving to the LAFD training academy when his vehicle became involved in an accident on the northbound 101 near Vineland Avenue shortly after 5 a.m. However, it was during the second crash that Fuerte was tragically struck while attempting to render aid.

A Witness to the Heartbreak

A witness to the horrific incident, who spoke to LA News Center on condition of anonymity, described the unfolding events: “I was driving behind Jacob’s car when I saw him collide with another vehicle. He got out and was trying to help when the other car hit him.”

The Search for the Hit-and-Run Driver

The driver responsible for the hit-and-run fled the scene, leaving investigators scrambling for clues. The CHP is working with limited information, but a source has told LA News Center that they believe the vehicle in question is a dark-colored SUV or van of unknown make and model.

A City in Mourning

The tragic loss of Recruit Fuerte has sent shockwaves through the Los Angeles community. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass paid tribute to Fuerte during her State of the City Address Monday evening, ordering city flags to fly at half-staff. “My heart goes out to the family during this difficult time,” Mayor Bass said.

A Call for Information

The CHP is urging anyone with information about the crash to call their West Valley office at 818-888-0980. The department is determined to bring the hit-and-run driver to justice and provide closure to the grieving family and friends of Jacob Fuerte.
