Campus Lockdown at Columbia University After Anti-Israel Riot

Columbia University has been forced to close its Morningside campus indefinitely after an anti-Israel mob stormed Hamilton Hall early Tuesday morning, barricading its doors and engaging in destructive and unlawful acts.

Unrest on Campus

Shortly before 1 a.m., a group of protesters stormed Hamilton Hall, a historic building on the campus. They quickly barricaded the entrances, using metal gates, wooden tables, chairs, and zip ties. The protesters also smashed windows and unfurled a Palestinian flag over one of them.

Footage captured during the incident shows protesters chanting slogans such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “Palestine will live forever.” They also disrupted academic activities and threatened the safety of staff and students.

Unlawful Occupation and Demands

The protesters remained inside Hamilton Hall beyond Tuesday morning, demanding the university divest its financial support of Israel, become more transparent with its investments, and provide blanket amnesty to the protesting students.

University officials initiated negotiations with the protesters but ultimately had no option but to call law enforcement to clear the building. The protesters refused to comply voluntarily, leading to their removal by force.

Campus Lockdown and Security

In response to the incident, the university immediately imposed a campus lockdown, restricting access to students and faculty. The lockdown remains in effect as of now, with only one access point into and out of the campus being available at 116th Street and Amsterdam gate.

Security personnel have been deployed to monitor the campus and enforce the lockdown. Students and faculty who need disability access will be allowed to enter through the Wien Gate.

University’s Statement

In a statement, Columbia University condemned the actions of the protesters, stating that the safety of students and staff remains paramount. The university also expressed its gratitude to the responding authorities and thanked the community for understanding during this challenging time.

“The safety of every single member of this community is paramount. We thank you for your patience, cooperation, and understanding,” the university’s statement read.

Ongoing Investigation

The incident is currently under investigation by both the university and law enforcement agencies. Arrests and charges are expected for those involved in the unlawful occupation and destruction of property.
