New York Governor Seeks Investigation into District Attorney After Traffic Stop Incident

Monroe County, New YorkLA News Center – New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced she will seek a state investigation into the conduct of Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley, following the release of bodycam footage that has drawn scrutiny.

District Attorney Defies Officer

On April 22, Doorley was pulled over by Webster Police for speeding 20 miles over the limit in a 35 mph zone. According to the obtained footage, Doorley did not initially stop her vehicle and instead drove to her home, about half a mile away.

When an officer followed her and approached her garage, Doorley refused to come outside, called the Webster Police Chief, and asked him to instruct the officer to leave. She also stated that police are not allowed to stop her.

Doorley’s hostile attitude towards the officer continued, and she refused to acknowledge her speeding violation despite video evidence showing her excessive speed.

Governor’s Response

Governor Hochul has condemned Doorley’s actions and their potential impact on her professional responsibilities. In a statement, she emphasized that District Attorneys have a duty to uphold ethical standards and to hold others accountable for violating the law.

She said, “District Attorneys must perform their duties with the highest ethical standards. Ms. Doorley’s actions undermine her ability to hold others accountable for violating the law and weaken public trust in the justice system.”

Investigation and Suspension

Hochul has directed the Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct to investigate the incident fully. The Commission reviews and investigates the conduct of prosecutors, including hearings and subpoenaing witnesses, and can recommend sanctions to the relevant grievance committee.

The Rochester City Council, which is composed entirely of Democratic members, has also sent a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James, requesting an investigation into Doorley’s conduct. The council has expressed concerns about her fitness to serve as District Attorney.

Doorley’s Response

Doorley has issued a statement acknowledging the traffic violation but defending her actions. She stated that she was driving home after a busy day and realized after a short distance that she was being pulled over.

She claims to have called the Police Chief out of concern for her safety and intended to speak to the officer at her home. She also stated that she has already pleaded guilty to the speeding ticket and accepted responsibility for her actions.

Despite the footage showing her hostile behavior, Doorley insists that she is dedicated to the community’s safety and stands by her record.
