Donovan McNabb Expresses Concern Over J.J. McCarthy’s NFL Draft Potential

3

In a recent interview with LA News Center, former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb shared his skepticism about the rising draft stock of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

McNabb’s Perspective

McNabb expressed surprise at McCarthy’s newfound status as a potential top-six draft pick. He emphasized the quarterback’s lack of WOW moments in college, particularly in terms of downfield passing and improvisation.

“I’ve seen a structured quarterback, but I didn’t see him wow you with anything,” McNabb stated. “And for him to be in the position they’re talking about, it’s amazing to me.”

Impressive Statistics, but Questions Remain

Despite leading an undefeated Michigan team to a national championship and accumulating impressive passing statistics, McNabb dismissed these accomplishments.

“He didn’t wow you with anything in college,” he reiterated. “You have to show the ability to get the ball downfield, ad lib on plays, throw on the run, do everything that you’re seeing most of these top quarterbacks do.”

Projected Landing Spots

McCarthy has completed pre-draft visits with the Washington Commanders (pick No. 2), the New England Patriots (pick No. 3), and the New York Giants (pick No. 6). The Giants have been rumored to be a possible landing spot for McCarthy.

Draft Day Uncertainty

With the NFL Draft approaching, it remains uncertain whether McCarthy’s impressive statistics will outweigh McNabb’s concerns in the minds of NFL executives. His pre-draft visits suggest interest from several teams, but only time will tell if they are willing to take the gamble on a player who has yet to fully impress.
