In a digital declaration, President Biden has joined the chorus of voices urging fair compensation for women in sports.

Women in Sports Deserve Fair Pay

“Women in sports continue to break barriers and inspire us all,” President Biden wrote. “But the reality is that even the very best are not being compensated equally.

Biden’s statement comes amid heightened interest in WNBA salaries sparked by the recent draft selection of top pick Caitlin Clark by the Indiana Fever.

WNBA Salary Disparities

According to Spotrac, Clark’s four-year rookie deal is expected to pay her 8,056. This includes an initial salary of ,535, rising to ,582 if the team exercises its option in 2027.

In contrast, some of the WNBA’s top-tier players, including Arike Ogunbowale, Kahleah Copper, and Jewell Loyd, earn nearly 2,000 per year.

Revenue Sharing as a Barrier

Experts point to revenue sharing as a key obstacle to increasing WNBA player salaries. Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac explains that the league must meet a certain revenue threshold before player compensation can be raised.

“While overall revenue is growing, player’s ability to capitalize is still very limited. Change is imminent,” Ginnitti said.

Supporting Women Athletes

In addition to their base salaries, WNBA players like Clark can supplement their income through endorsement deals. However, Biden’s statement underscores the need for fair base pay that reflects the value they bring to the game.

“It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.”

Growing Popularity of the WNBA

The 2023 WNBA season saw a surge in viewership and attendance. The league reported an average viewership of 505,000 across ESPN, ABC, and CBS – the highest in 21 years.

Attendance also increased by 16%, with an average of 6,615 fans per game.

A Call for Equity

President Biden’s statement echoes the growing demand for equal pay for women in all industries, including sports. As the WNBA continues to gain momentum, it is imperative that players receive fair compensation commensurate with their talent and contributions to the game.
