Boise, Idaho – The Ada County law enforcement community is mourning the tragic loss of Deputy Tobin Bolter, 27, who was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on Saturday night.
As Deputy Bolter approached the driver of a gray Chevy Suburban just before 9 pm, he was met with gunfire. The driver, a 65-year-old man with a misdemeanor warrant, fled the scene after the shooting.
A Witness’s Bravery
A vigilant citizen witnessed the shooting and immediately called 911. They rushed to Bolter’s aid, performing CPR until paramedics arrived. The gravely injured deputy was rushed to Saint Alphonsus Medical Regional Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
The Suspect and a Fatal Standoff
Boise police swiftly located the suspect’s abandoned vehicle and later identified a man, believed to be the shooter, outside a residence. The suspect refused to surrender to police, resulting in a standoff. Shortly after midnight, the suspect fired at officers, prompting a return fire that proved fatal.

Deputy Bolter joined the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in January after serving the Meridian and Pleasant Hill, California, police departments. With seven years of law enforcement experience, he had a reputation for unwavering dedication to protecting his community.

Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar expressed his deepest condolences and praised the citizen who selflessly assisted Deputy Bolter. Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford held an emotional press conference, thanking the paramedics and bystander for their heroic efforts.

Governor Brad Little ordered U.S. and Idaho flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen deputy. “Our brave men and women in blue put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect us,” he said. “Idaho is grieving this devastating loss.”
