Comedian Jay Jurden has been turning heads for the past few years, earning a spot on numerous “Comics to Watch” lists. His impressive resume includes writing for Apple TV Plus’s “The Problem with Jon Stewart” and releasing a comedy album, “Jay Jurden, Y’all,” which debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in 2020.

In an exclusive interview with LA News Center, Jurden shared insights into his childhood, comedic journey, and aspirations.

Early Influences and Inspirations

Growing up in the vibrant city of Charleston, South Carolina, Jurden’s childhood was steeped in comedy and storytelling. Inspired by shows like “Martin” and “Seinfeld,” he developed a keen sense of humor and a desire to make people laugh.

“I remember watching ‘Martin’ and just laughing my head off,” Jurden said. “The way they could deliver jokes and make people feel good was something I admired.”

He credits his father, a minister, with nurturing his love of storytelling and performing.

Breaking into Comedy

After graduating from college, Jurden moved to New York City to pursue his comedic dreams. He spent countless hours performing at open mics and developing his unique style, which blends storytelling and observational humor.

“It was a tough grind, but I knew I had something to say,” Jurden said. “I wanted to talk about my experiences as a black man in America, and I believed comedy was the best way to do that.”

Personalizing the Comedy Experience

While Jurden appreciates the traditional stand-up comedy format, he constantly seeks innovative ways to connect with his audience.

“I like to get personal with my comedy,” Jurden said. “I share stories from my own life, and I invite the audience to journey with me.”

In addition to stand-up, Jurden has expanded his comedic reach to include writing, podcasting, and creating sketch videos.

The Importance of Storytelling

Throughout his career, Jurden has prioritized the art of storytelling. He believes that comedy should not only make people laugh but also resonate with them on a deeper level.

“I want my comedy to be both funny and meaningful,” Jurden said. “I want people to laugh, but I also want them to think and to feel.”

Future Ambitions

As Jurden continues to rise in the comedy world, he has ambitious plans for the future. He aspires to produce his own comedy specials, write for television shows, and even release a book.

“I’m just getting started,” Jurden said with a smile. “I’m excited about all the possibilities that lie ahead.”

Exclusive Sneak Peek

LA News Center surprised Jurden with a special surprise during the interview: a sneak peek at a new comedy sketch he had been working on. The sketch, inspired by a recent personal experience, had the entire crew in stitches.

After the laughter subsided, Jurden beamed with pride and thanked the team for their support.

“That means the world to me,” Jurden said. “I can’t wait to share my comedy with the world.”
