USC Partially Reopens After Protests, Amid Ongoing Scrutiny

The University of Southern California (USC) has partially reopened its main campus Sunday morning following a brief overnight closure due to a “disturbance.” However, full access is yet to be restored.

Campus Access Limited

According to a post on X, formerly Twitter, USC announced the reopening of two entrances: the McCarthy and McClintock gates. These gates are open for students, staff, faculty, and registered guests.

Protests Continue

The closure on Saturday night came amid ongoing protests and demonstrations on campus against the Israel-Hamas conflict. A growing number of protesters have voiced their opposition to the violence and called for a ceasefire in Gaza.

According to KTLA’s Chris Wolfe, there were reports of vandalism on campus during the protests. Demonstrators have also set up an encampment to continue their demands.

Pro-Israeli Counter-Protest Planned

A pro-Israeli counter-protest is scheduled for Sunday, adding to the already tense atmosphere on campus.

USC’s Handling Underscrutiny

USC’s handling of the pro-Palestinian protests and advocates has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks.

Graduation Controversies

On April 15th, the university canceled the Class of 2024 Valedictorian’s speech at the main commencement due to “safety issues.” Asna Tabassum, the designated speaker, had a pro-Palestinian website linked on her social media profile, prompting accusations of antisemitism from pro-Israeli groups.

Following this incident, USC opted to cancel the main commencement altogether, citing “safety concerns.”

Ongoing Investigation

In light of the controversies, USC has launched an independent investigation into the decision-making process surrounding the commencement cancellations. The investigation is being conducted by former federal judge Michael Garcia.

Campus Safety and Security Measures

As the campus partially reopens, USC is taking steps to ensure safety and security.

  • Security has been increased at all open entrances.
  • Guests can only enter the campus after registering online and checking in at the designated gates.
  • University officials are closely monitoring the situation and will make adjustments as needed.

Students and community members are encouraged to stay informed and report any concerns to campus authorities.

Remaining Closures

While the McCarthy and McClintock gates are open, certain areas of the campus remain closed, including:

  1. The University Park campus dormitories
  2. The Ronald Tutor Campus Center
  3. The Galen Center

University officials expect to provide updates on the reopening of these areas by Sunday afternoon.
