Fallen Heroes: Heartfelt Tribute and Call for Respect at Memorial

LA News Center Reports on Deputy Marshal’s Moving Memorial

Charlotte’s Bojangles Coliseum reverberated with emotion on Monday as hundreds gathered to pay their respects to Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. “Tommy” Weeks, one of four law enforcement officers tragically slain in a shootout last week. Among those present was U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

A Mother’s Heartbreak

Kelly Weeks, the bereaved wife of Deputy Weeks, bravely addressed the crowd, her voice heavy with both sorrow and resolve. She condemned the killer, 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr., as “someone who did not have any regard for human life.” Hughes perished at the scene after engaging in a deadly shootout with Deputy Weeks, North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Officers Sam Poloche and William “Alden” Elliott, and CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer. The officers were attempting to serve a warrant at Hughes’ home when the confrontation erupted.

Tragedy’s Toll

Four more officers sustained injuries while trying to restrain Hughes, who had a “lengthy” criminal record, according to North Carolina Public Records. Deputy Weeks was a 13-year veteran of the Marshals Service, having served in Charlotte since 2014. Prior to that, he worked with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A Wife’s Plea

Through her tears, Kelly Weeks issued a heartfelt plea: “I need this country to come together, to support our law enforcement officers so they can continue to fight for justice just like my husband did. Thank an officer every single day, encourage our children to show police officers the proper respect.” She expressed her desire that her husband’s sacrifice would inspire others and “lift up his fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement.”

Attorney General’s Presence

Attorney General Garland paid tribute to Deputy Weeks and the other slain officers, acknowledging their bravery and the ultimate price they paid for protecting the community. He shared how Kelly Weeks’ words had lifted his own spirits even amid unimaginable grief.

Call for Reform

The tragedy sparked a discussion about the need for improved protocols during law enforcement operations. Former FBI agent Nicole Parker urged Garland and the Justice Department to develop concrete guidelines for arrests and takedowns. She compared last week’s incident to a similar shooting where two FBI agents were killed in 2021. Parker emphasized the importance of federal agents receiving proper protection and training during dangerous operations.

Community Support

Charlotte Police Chief Johnny Jennings praised the fallen officers, stating that they faced “a great disadvantage” during the shootout. He highlighted the extensive criminal history of the suspect and called upon citizens to extend their support and respect not only to law enforcement but to one another.

A National Crisis

President Biden visited Charlotte to meet with the families of the victims and CMPD members. He expressed his commitment to protecting law enforcement officers by providing adequate funding and resources, as well as enacting stricter gun control measures. The President emphasized that the time for action is now, calling on Congress to address the scourge of gun violence that continues to claim countless lives.
