A Rising Tide of Violence
Since March 29, at least seven staff members have been injured by inmates, with two sustaining serious injuries. The SFDSA reports that prisoner fights have increased by 58% and inmate-on-inmate attacks have jumped by 79% in 2023 compared to 2022.

“I am writing to urgently address the escalating violence within the San Francisco Jails,” wrote Ken Lomba, SFDSA President, in a letter to city leaders. “Given the severity of these challenges, I demand that you immediately request deployment of the California National Guard to temporarily supplement our current staffing levels.”
