Heartbreaking Unrest at UCLA: Displacement and Discord Amidst Campus Protest

In a deeply moving letter to the UCLA community, Chancellor Gene Block expressed profound sorrow and a fervent hope for healing following the tumultuous events engulfing the campus. The heart-wrenching spectacle of overnight clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and counter-demonstrators culminated in a decision to clear a contentious encampment on Royce Quad.

Origins of Division

UCLA had initially granted permission for the protest encampment as a platform for voicing concerns about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. However, deepening divisions and escalating violence necessitated police intervention to restore order.

Chancellor Block lamented that demonstrations had “interfered with instruction, led to closures and cancellations, and created an untenable atmosphere.” He emphasized the unlawful and policy-violating nature of the encampment.

Humanitarian Crisis amid Hostility

Amidst the campus unrest, Chancellor Block acknowledged the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. He pledged UCLA’s support for pro-Palestinian protesters’ First Amendment right to demonstrate while condemning antisemitism and recognizing the deep pain endured by Jewish students and faculty in the aftermath of the Hamas attacks and the escalating antisemitic sentiment worldwide.

Path Forward

Chancellor Block outlined immediate actions to address ongoing issues. “We will continue to investigate the violent incidents, particularly those sparked by instigators,” he declared. Counseling and support resources are being made available to support students and staff during this challenging period.

Emphasizing the need for unity in adversity, Block concluded, “I implore us all to be there for one another and to reinforce the bonds that connect us as a community of knowledge.”
